Meet Nutr: the maker of single-serve non-dairy milks designed to encourage healthy habits at home.
If a non-dairy milk alternative is on your weekly grocery list, you probably already know you can make it at home on the cheap. As I add another gallon of oatmeal to my cart, I sometimes think about the blender and nut milk packets I have at home. If you’re like me, your habit of store-bought processed milk trumps homemade milk alternatives simply because it takes time to prepare.
To a skeptic, the idea of a machine that produced a variety of non-dairy milks was no different than the blender and nut milk bags I no longer use. However, after using Nutr for a month, I can say that this little device did what a blender can’t: it helped me get into the habit of making plant-based milk at home.
Nutr is part blender, part electric kettle, and it features several cleverly programmed cycles that boil and grind your choice of nuts, legumes, grains or seeds into frothy milk. While the room temperature cycle takes about five minutes and is ideal for oat milk, the hot cycle highlights Nutr Best’s strengths.
For soy milk, add 1 tablespoon dried soybeans, a dash of sweetener, and a pinch of salt to 1 cup water and turn on the heat cycle. Over the next 20 minutes or so, the Nutr will go through a cycle of boiling, resting, pulsing, further boiling, and pulsing again, ending with a gentle beep letting you know your steaming hot soy milk is ready. When you’re done, all you have to do is strain the milk through the included strainer into a cup, then give the Nutr a quick rinse to keep it clean for next time.
As a disposable device, the Nutr can process up to 1.5 cups of milk at a time and can be used twice before requiring a 1-hour break to allow the motor and internal components to cool.
It comes with a quick start guide, which is probably one of the best manuals I’ve ever received on a home kitchen appliance. Nutr’s catalog of plant-based milk recipes is extensive, but it’s based on a general recipe that’s easy to remember and repeat. Add 2-4 tablespoons of dried nuts, grains, seeds or legumes, 1-1.5 cups of water, a little sweetener and a pinch of salt to Nutr, cycle and strain when complete. This is a simple habit that can be easily incorporated into your daily life.
I’m skeptical, and this will only be justified if plant milk producers can produce alternative milk of equal or better quality than store-bought milk. In my tests, I tried oat, almond, soy, cashew, pecan, and peanut milk recipes.
Despite the huge difference in taste, I can say that of the six types of milk, the homemade taste of fresh soy and almond milk is definitely the best. Pecans and cashews make some of the most unique coffee creamers I’ve ever tried. While Nutr makes a delicious oat milk in a pinch—it’s still my favorite cereal bowl recipe—I can’t expect homemade oat milk to be top quality. Oatly uses the magic of enzymes to break down the starch in oats into sugars, and simply put, their quality is hard to beat at home, even with Nutr.
Since the Nutr can only make up to 1.5 cups of milk at a time, it may not be the best device for large families. I’ve been using the 1.5 cup serving size model for the past month and can say it’s the perfect size for typical consumption by two adults. While I don’t need a larger capacity, Nutr has released the 2.0 series, which includes a larger model that holds 3-4 cups and is called a “family size.”
While your taste may differ from mine, the included Nutr filter makes the milk thicker than I would like. While it’s nice to see multiple layers of strain mesh, I stand by my opinion that the filter is well designed and completely comfortable to use. The filter fits perfectly onto a mason jar and can be easily added with a gauze pad for a more filter-rich end result. Even with a cheesecloth liner, filtration is no more difficult than making coffee.
However, before you buy this product, I have a question for you: Are you dreaming of making plant-based milk at home, but cannot make a batch in a blender? As someone who answered yes, I can say that the Nutr machine will improve your habits. Brewing high-quality plant-based milk can be as easy as brewing coffee. If you’re looking to eliminate expensive milk alternatives from your shopping list, this little machine will help you switch to homemade milk.
