A common upgrade hackers make for their espresso machines is to use a better temperature controller to improve stability and performance, but [Schematix]‘s smart coffee project doesn’t stop there. It completely replaces the machine controller and offers a number of additional improvements for a variety of single boiler machines (most of them).
Smart Coffee is not free and costs NZ$16 (about $10), but there is a free demo version. There is no official support, but there are plenty of wiring guides and resources for purchasing various additional parts. It runs on an Arduino MEGA 2560 PRO (or similar microcontroller) and supports a variety of additional hardware including pressure sensors, water level sensors, flow meters, OLED displays and more.
Modifying an espresso machine is a rewarding endeavor, but the Smart Coffee Project offers a way to hack and functionally modify it directly, rather than figuring out the hardware interface connections from scratch.
We’ve already seen [Schematix's] DIY induction heater in action, and it shows off some thoughtful design, and it’s clear he takes his coffee just as seriously. Watch the detailed review and installation video for Smart Coffee embedded below the page break.
